BACKGROUND

Currently your in the capital city, Emeritus, on a populated terra-formed moon not unlike Earth called, Paterra-4. Whether you were born here or traveled here matters little. On the surface, the culture of this planet seems like a utopia. However, Paterra-4 has little resources to offer and industry is non-existent. By all appearances most companies here seem to be administration centers for off-world industries. However, in actuality the entire economics of the planet is based almost entirely on the trade of information. The wealthy here are those who know how to get information, sell it, or exploit it. You will find plenty of opportunities for clerical work. But the pay is poor and taxes are high. Most citizens are employed by a corporation that provides everything for that citizen from housing and meals to medical care. Those who are not employed by a company are subject to pay taxes quarterly. If a citizen is unable to pay their taxes they are revoked of citizen status. These individuals are called “non-contributors” and made to wear red robes in public to remind others of the penalty of tax evasion. Another citizen may “sponsor” a non-contributor and pay their taxes. If such an agreement is made, the non-contributor is bound to serve their sponsor until their debt is repaid in addition to all back taxes. Often times, corporation offices will sponsor non-contributors and give them menial positions for barely no pay. Non-contributors rarely regain citizen status and so elect to try the only other alternative on Paterra-4: running. It became such a trend for non-contributors to run, in fact, that an agency was established to capture and return them. There became so many incidents of non-contributor runners that this local agency wasn’t able to keep up. Therefore, other free lance organizations were allowed to assist in exchange for a bounty. Thus, the mercenary guild was born. Through a series of bad luck, mishaps, misunderstandings, and quite a bit of debt you find yourself in dire straights. You need money and you need it fast or you need to get off world. If you don’t come up with 65 Dcr by the end of the month, you risk losing citizen status and becoming a non-contributor. You could gamble what you have left but you know how well that worked out for you in the past; not good. You might decide it is better to be a hunter, than become the hunted.
